About Us:

We are a group of friends and classmates who had the privilege of being educated by the Dominican Sisters. Upon hearing the Sisters were organizing a gathering of friends with the proceeds benefitting their retirement needs, we decided to help.

Our sole purpose is to raise funds by organizing events and soliciting donations with the proceeds going for their general welfare and retirement needs.

The Friends of the Dominican Sisters Sparkill–StL is recognized as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) public charity by the Internal Revenue Service. To view a copy of the official letter recognizing this status, click here.

Our Mission:

The Mission of the Friends of the Dominican Sisters Sparkill–STL is to provide financial support to the Sisters for their general welfare and retirement needs.

The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, New York, are members of the Dominican Order founded in 1206 in Fanjeaux, France, to follow the vision of St. Dominic. The Order came to the United States in 1876 and is currently serving in fourteen states. The Dominican Sisters' mission includes education (teaching high school and grade school), residential housing for the elderly and handicapped, missionary work in Pakistan and Peru, and arts and culture.

The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, New York, taught elementary education in St. Louis, Missouri, at numerous Roman Catholic parish schools. The Sisters were nominally compensated and provided minimal housing. The Sisters took a vow of poverty when they joined the Order, and the various parishes provided little if any funding for retirement and welfare benefits. The Sisters had no personal wealth and are now in or rapidly approaching retirement.

There are no Roman Catholic organizations that have or will assume the mantle of responsibility for the Sisters' welfare and retirement needs. Consequently, it falls on the shoulders of their friends.

This organization is created to raise funds for the Sisters for their general welfare and retirement needs from all those who derived benefits from the Sisters' labor.

We have received a letter from Bishop Morgan Casey regarding the work of this organization. Many of you may remember him as Father Casey, the associate pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish from 1962 to 1965. Bishop Casey has served in Bolivia since leaving Mary Magdalen in 1965 and was ordained a bishop in 1988. To read his letter, please click here.
